Statistics and Spin - UK Unemployment
The Government has just announced that UK unemployment fell by 51,000 in the three months to April 2012. That sounds like good news. However, there is a little spin in the statistic.
The number of people claiming Jobseekers allowance (The Claimant Count) actually increased by 8,100. So we all have to try and figure out what this all means. We don’t really need Government statistics because most business people and entrepreneurs just have to talk to their friends and business associates to get a clear sense of the unemployment market. It is a case of “this time we are seeing a very healthy increase in full time jobs” as an employment minister suggests. But then again we as accountants have to be careful because we are normally accused of being very creative with statistics. However, this statistic is difficult to spin. The unemployment market is difficult and this has a pretty “dampening” impact on the business opportunities for our clients.
