The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has ‘ordered’ their senior managers to visit their SME customers and find out what their customers need from their bank. As one of the UK’s biggest lenders to SMEs I’m surprised they don’t already know what their customers want. Their CEO claims it’s important to stay connected with their customers and I couldn’t agree more.

The small business community contribute much more than they are given credit for and banks, amongst other industries, can learn a lot from them and should pay them more attention. They contribute to the economy on a massive scale, they have much more of an appeal to the wider public than larger corporations due to their local approach and they bring in lots of jobs.

And what do small businesses want? They want things kept simple, whether it is a tax system that is easy to understand or help when they need it – whether it is from their local bank or the Government. So, if RBS do care about their SME customers, let’s see what happens and as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
