“Have you met Herbert Anchovy?” John Cleese

It’s fair to say that Accountants get a rough ride – they come in all shapes and sizes but are still seen as faceless, grey number crunchers with no sense of humour. Well let me tell you that I’ve been working with accountants for many, many years and I can say that they are far from it – give or take one or two.

Ok, so it’s not necessarily a glamorous job, they look at lots of spreadsheets and they’re very good at getting your numbers in order but think of what they do for your business as a whole. It’s fair to say that businesses do so much better with a good accountant on their team and the fact that they can potentially save you money is not boring by any means – this takes knowledge and skill.

It’s one of those professions that has been tried and tested by many; some have succeeded and others haven’t and have moved on. It’s by no means easy and I can guarantee you that a lot of businesses today would struggle without one - so you can understand why they take their work so seriously, after all it’s your money they’re looking after.

On a lighter note, here are some interesting facts I bet most of you weren’t aware of:

  • Bubble gum was invented in 1928 by accountant Walter Dimer
  • Chicago crime boss Al Capone was finally brought down in 1931 by FBI accountants for tax evasion
  • Mick Jagger and Eddie Izzard have found worldwide success in their vocations but they too studied accountancy – we can all agree they’re certainly not dull and I bet they’re very good at looking after their own money.

The moral of this story is don’t judge others by what they do for a living as the above has shown us it takes all sorts - at the end of the day we can’t all be James Bond or a Charlie’s Angel so does that make us all boring too?

AIMS is good for you and we can guarantee that if you like the way we think – you will like the way we work.

AIMS Accountants for Business are the largest independent association of professionally qualified accountants in the UK specialising in accountancy for small, local and independent businesses. AIMS are no ordinary accountants and we are more than just number crunchers!
