9.4 million Tax returns were submitted this year which is an increase of approximately 4.5% on 2011. The possible explanations are as follows:

  • There are more self-employed people.
  • More people are caught by the increasing complexities of the tax system.
  • Or perhaps people are becoming more honest and submitting tax returns for the first time because they now feel it is proper to do so.

Over 90% of all returns were submitted online which equates to approximately 8.5 million returns, submitted over the internet. This is no mean feat for any IT system! Many took advantage of the Christmas holidays to wrap up their returns this year, with 1,100 people filing online on Christmas Day; 3,512 on Boxing Day; 11,648 on New Year’s Eve; and 8,935 on New Year’s Day. In fact, 102 people put the New Year celebratory champagne on ice to file their return between 11pm and midnight on 31 December 2011. I wonder how many of these 102 were Accountants submitting the forms for their clients?
