A tax return was sent to Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) who promptly returned it to its owner who failed to fill it in accurately. Let’s just say when HMRC asks you “Do you have anyone dependent on you?” and your answer is “2.1 million illegal immigrants, 4.4 million unemployable Jeremy Kyle scroungers…..” – it does go on but you get the idea. Filing your tax return is a serious matter and you have to take great care when submitting them. If your submissions are late you will be liable for a late penalty charge and if you make a mistake, deliberate or not you may still be liable to pay a penalty charge. HMRC will make the final decision on that so don’t try and fool them. They’ve been doing this for a long time and can sniff out anyone trying to mislead them – well most of the time!
People do genuinely make mistakes but there is plenty of help if you need it; HMRC even have a guide – 28 pages in fact on filing your tax return but do you really have time to sift through them?
